Patrick Kniveton the IMechE president delivered his presidential address at Rotherham based AESSEAL®. His address focused on his vision that engineers should be sending the world a clear message about the value of engineering and the need for engineers.
Patrick’s address detailed how Engineers have been around since the dawn of mankind, they are the perfect example of innovators, taking ideas and continually refining and improving them. But do they do enough to promote the work that they do?
Patrick, who is currently head of Engineering Improvement for Rolls-Royce Submarines, has experience working on a variety of challenging engineering roles, from observatories at the top of mountains, to working on the UK’s nuclear power capability.
It is this diverse engineering experience that has made Patrick believe that “Engineering is fundamental to the quality of life and prosperity of future generations and that Engineering is the cornerstone of a successful and profitable nation”.
Patrick believes that engineers have become too modest and the 100,000 individual voices within the IMechE should begin to change this by shouting the values of engineering. “We should celebrate today’s engineers, and we should understand that we are a whole family of engineering people, who are necessary to deliver the quality of life and improvements that we enjoy”.
Engineering is fundamental to the quality of life and prosperity of future generations and that Engineering is the cornerstone of a successful and profitable nation.
In addition to delivering his presidential address Patrick took a tour of the AESSEAL® Global Technology Centre. Patrick also spent some invaluable time with a group of AESSEAL® engineers who are on the IMechE monitored professional development scheme. The time that Patrick gave up to speak with the AESSEAL® engineers was gratefully received by the engineers themselves and the company as a whole.
