It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Dame Julie Kenny DBE DL, a visionary business leader, passionate advocate for South Yorkshire and a valued non-executive director of AES Engineering Ltd. Julie passed away on Friday 21st February 2025, at the age of 67.

A self-made entrepreneur, Dame Julie was a force to be reckoned with. Her unwavering determination and dedication to excellence made her a role model in business and beyond. Over the years, she received numerous accolades, reflecting her incredible impact on industry, heritage, and the local community.

Born in Sheffield, Dame Julie dedicated much of her life to Rotherham, the town she often credited with shaping her. She was a driving force behind the restoration of Wentworth Woodhouse, one of Britain’s most significant architectural treasures. Describing the project as “one of the most inspiring, yet hardest, challenges of my life,” she successfully led the campaign to save the historic estate from decline, securing its future for generations to come. Her outstanding contributions were recognised in 2019 when she was awarded the title of Dame Commander of the British Empire.

Dame Julie also made history as the second woman to hold the prestigious title of Master Cutler in 2023. As Master Cutler, she played a vital role in championing South Yorkshire’s manufacturing heritage and engineering excellence, working tirelessly to promote industry growth and regional investment. Her leadership in this role further cemented her legacy as an advocate for business and innovation.

Dame Julie’s journey to success was shaped by the resilience she built during a difficult childhood. Growing up in challenging circumstances, she developed the tenacity and work ethic that defined her career. Despite the obstacles she faced, she remained dedicated to education, self-improvement and helping others achieve their full potential.
