Why were the seals failing?
This was the result of a problem with the labyrinth seal in the existing system. After only a few hours of operation it would start to allow product to leak into the bearing chamber, polluting the lubricating oil and increasing pressure, which in turn caused oil to leak to the outside.
What did AESSEAL suggest?
We proposed the installation of the MagTecta OMTM, which offers greater protection than a conventional labyrinth seal. In many plants, oil mist is the preferred method of bearing lubrication. Labyrinth technology allows the oil mist to leak out and contaminate the surrounding area. To compensate, companies often increase the supply of oil mist to maintain pressure. This means wasted energy and loss of oil mist, both of which are expensive. The MagTecta OMTM is designed to minimize leakage into the environment so there is no need to over-compensate by increasing the supply of oil mist. This reduces costs and prevents the pollution of the environment.
Was it difficult to persuade the company to change?
No. The customer had already tried several solutions, none of which had worked. We presented them with a system which worked, and it didn’t take long for them to see the advantages.
What difference did the MagTecta make?
After installation and maintenance costs, the MagTecta OMTM saved the customer around €140,000 in just two and a half years, while at the same time increasing the mean time between failure (MTBF) by over 400%.
Were there any unexpected challenges or obstacles?
None. From the start the installation and commissioning went smoothly.
What after-sales service did you provide?
We now hold a number of MagTecta OMTM seals in stock, ready for immediate delivery in the event of any problems. We also make regular visits to the plant as part of our customer service.
What feedback did the customer provide?
The customer was very satisfied with the application. As a result we have fitted AESSEAL products to a range of machinery elsewhere in the plant, such as pumps, gearboxes, and blowers. In addition, the company is part of one of Italy’s biggest industrial groups, so we have used the work carried out at this site as a reference to compete for business at some of the company’s other locations.
